WHEREAS, 94% of U.S. adults identify speeding as a problem [1], 68% of drivers felt other drivers speeding as a major threat to their personal safety [2], and speeding and aggressive driving has been the biggest concern for drivers, with 18.8% of respondents citing it as the biggest safety problem on California roadways [3];
WHEREAS, Pedestrian safety should be considered a priority in a high traffic area, college populations are at an increased risk for crashes involving speeding due to young age [4], as drivers 24 and under have the highest number of serious injury or fatal collision victims associated with Speeding and Aggressive Driving collisions per share of licensed driver [5];
WHEREAS, The colleges often do not directly address parking and safety concerns regarding speeding including but not limited to parking lots and structures, during heavy traffic in the winter and spring semesters; and
WHEREAS, Vehicular collisions due to speeding and aggressive driving can be mitigated by speed bumps, reducing speeds by 73.52% [6], and increasing awareness of posted speed limits
[4]; Now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges work with the Chancellor’s Office to encourage colleges to increase implementation of speed regulation interventions such as speed bumps on campus and high visibility posted speed limits; and
RESOLVED, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges, in partnership with the California Community College Chancellor’s Office, educates campus clubs and organizations on traffic and safety policy on campus at the beginning of each semester, thereby raising campus awareness and encouraging procedure.
