WHEREAS, The Cabrillo College Stroke and Disability Learning Center is an integral resource for the Santa Cruz County community, offering a dedicated facility and comprehensive programming that supports the mental, physical, and emotional development of its students; [1]
WHEREAS, The California Community College system serves 2.2 million students, yet Cabrillo College remains the only community college in California, out of the 116, to provide a specialized Stroke and Disability Center to this degree; [2]
WHEREAS, This program provides a wide range of therapeutic and educational services, including mobility therapy, ceramics and pottery instruction, painting therapy, speech classes supported by speech pathologists, gardening therapy, and music therapy [3]; and
WHEREAS, This program affirms individuals with stroke-related and other disabilities, not as patients, but as students entitled to accessible, affordable, and high-quality education that empowers independence, dignity, and lifelong learning, which is the mission of California Community Colleges[4]; Now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the the Student Senate for California Community Colleges work with the Chancellor’s Office to encourage and work toward the establishment of equivalent or similar Stroke and Disability Learning Centers at community college campuses statewide, beginning with at least one college per region and expanding progressively; and
RESOLVED, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges advocate for students with stroke-related and other disabilities, and their right to inclusive, high-quality educational opportunities that promote equity, community, and student success across the California Community College system.
